‘Jersey Shore’ has been a hit with fans even as it has been consistently derided by critics. The show depicts a group of (supposedly) Italian American 20-somethings who live, work, play and (near constantly) get drunk together. The antics ensue.

Fortunately for the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of fans who cannot attend the event in person, YouTube will also provide live streaming video of all the performances.

This is a very big deal, both for Lollapalooza, which has struggled in the past with declining interest, and YouTube, which is trying to boost interest in its new live streaming service.

If you are among the folks who wish you could be in Chicago watching Lollapalooza, but are stuck at home mowing the grass, relax. YouTube has got you covered!

This weekend, the Lollapalooza music festival will unfold in Chicago’s downtown Grant Park—and on computers around the world. YouTube will stream live video of performances by Coldplay, Foo Fighters, My Morning Jacket and dozens of other bands.

Live webcasting represents the next act for music festivals, the biggest of which draw hundreds of thousands of fans. Video sites are eager to tap into the festivals’ loyal fan bases. In June, music-video service Vevo webcast from Bonnaroo, capturing members of Arcade Fire, the Strokes and others dripping sweat in high definition in the Tennessee heat. YouTube, which had Bonnaroo rights the previous year, laid claim to Coachella in April, drawing a remote audience approaching that of the British royal wedding; the wedding garnered 72 million streams on YouTube the same month.

To webcast Lollapalooza and the Austin City Limits festival in September, YouTube bought live streaming rights from the events’ producer, C3 Presents, which is orchestrating the shoots on site with funding from sponsors Dell and Advanced Micro Devices. Neither C3 or YouTube would discuss the price of the deal, but people familiar with the market say that video sites typically pay major festivals between $250,000 and $1 million for live streaming rights.

The New York Yankees live game against the White Sox will be shown on a free MLB live stream video feed online tonight. That means this one’s on the house for fans of the Bronx Bombers around the country. Toronto-based Rogers, which owns and runs the Toronto Blue Jays team out of its Rogers Centre stadium, said Rogers Sportsnet coverage of the TV games will be made available on its Rogers On Demand Online – the media group’s answer to Netflix Canada — and on its Rogers on Demand Mobile subscription service.

The same online and mobile video services will also from August 8 live stream Sportsnet coverage of the 2011 Rogers Cup tennis tournament from Toronto.

The live streaming of pro baseball and tennis matches is the latest revamp of the Sports brand, which includes a launch of a Sportsnet magazine, a relaunch of its FAN sports radio stations in Toronto and Calgary as Sportsnet Radio, and the recent acquisition of the Setanta Sports Canada cable channel, to be rebranded this Fall as Sportsnet World.

The feature isn’t fully fleshed out yet. To try it, you have to copy and paste the YouTube ID for the video from youtube.com/live first. (All those numbers and letters in the video’s URL.)

When you’re in a Google+ Hangout, you have to copy that ID into the video tab in the Hangout window. This will let everyone in your Hangout watch the same video at the same time.

Keep in mind this is only for live streams on YouTube. The concept here is to make a live viewing experience, as if you and your friends are in the same room watching the same show or event.

ESPN has really been leading the charge to make more live streaming video access available to more and more sports fans. They have offered live streaming video for baseball, golf and tennis. ESPN3 has been doing a fantastic job of not only offering live streaming video of their events, but getting the word out that the service is available and making certain the streaming video feed was accessible and in good working order.

So far, no glitches.

Golf’s Senior Open Championship 2011 will be available via live streaming video feed online for free, thanks to ESPN technology. Golf fans will be able to witness the action as it happens online starting Thursday afternoon.

The free live stream will be presented courtesy of ESPN3, starting on Thursday at 12PM EST. This will be coverage of The Senior Open Championship’s First Round. Additional “bonus coverage” will occur on Friday starting at 7AM EST, and 12PM EST. There will also be coverage for those who prefer to watch the event on television via ESPN.

Favored to win the tournament this year are Tom Lehman, Nick Price, Tom Watson, John Cook. Others competing in the Senior Open are Bernhardt Langer, Jeff Sluman and Mark Calcavecchia. Langer is the defending champion and will look to repeat despite his recent injury. The tournament will take place until Sunday, July 24th’s final round.

ESPN3 continues to bring fans the sports they want to enjoy both on television and online. Live streaming video accounts for just a small fraction of the used bandwidth around the globe as Internet surfers find new and interesting things to watch. There are live streaming video feeds from sporting events and concerts; seminars and performances; live streaming video of animal babies and street scenes.

It seems as if anything that could be transmitted via live streaming video has been or will be soon, making the ‘Golden Age’ of live streaming video something which has not quite happened yet. And the key ingredient which has been missing, is revenue….

Honest Tea is wrapping up a live social experiment today with unmanned pop-up tea stores in major U.S. cities. The campaign demonstrates how streaming video can play an important role in modern marketing campaigns.

Honest Tea placed bottles in prominent locations, unattended, and let passers-by purchase them on the honor system. The San Francisco location, near the historic Ferry Building, is pictured to the right. Each bottle cost one dollar, and it was up to each individual to decide if they would pay for their drinks. Honest Tea used hidden cameras and Ustream’s live interactive broadcast platform to see how honest folks were.

The campaign found Chicago was the most honest city, with 99 percent of visiters to the pop up paying for their tea. New York came in last with 86 percent paying. San Francisco was 8th with 93 percent.

Even if your city wasn’t competing, you could still be polled online. 99 percent of online users polled said they would pay for a bottle. (Sure, that’s easy to say when a cold bottle of tea isn’t staring you in the face.)

“The digital component really brought the brand to many many more consumers,” said Honest Tea VP of marketing Peter Kaye, in an interview with VentureBeat. “We want more people to ‘like’ us and follow us on Facebook. The live streaming certainly helped. We will have doubled our number of ‘likes’ to over 60,000 in one day.”

The campaign was effective, and cute, but it was the live streaming that got our attention. Perhaps many unknowing participants didn’t see the the hidden cameras, such as the the one aimed at the San Francisco pop up, pictured to the left. Signs explaining the legal rights to live broadcast and record the event were posted everywhere, but the ice-cold bottles of tea were what passers-by noticed.

They were able to show fans around the country the previous game, where Team USA defeated France to gain entry into the finals. Now, USA will look to get that final, rewarding win on Sunday as they battle Japan. Game time is approximately 2PM EST.

The service is available in many regions around the United States and works in conjunction with specific internet providers. The streaming service also works with Xbox Live, and offers remote access to those who sign up with an ESPN account for free.

The Women’s World Cup Final results are going to provide plenty of emotion and excitement for fans around the United States. Team USA has really pumped up the nation with their run in the FIFA World Cup for 2011 and has fans excited to see if they can capture a FIFA championship on Sunday. CNN Worldwide is the first news organization to stream its linear television channels online and on mobile devices to consumers who subscribe to a multi-channel video service. Simultaneous to this launch, CNN.com has debuted its new video experience, which seamlessly integrates live network TV into a larger and higher-quality video player, capable of delivering HD quality.

CNN and HLN online and mobile streaming is currently available to approximately 50 million households with subscribers to participating pay TV providers, including: AT&T, Comcast, Cox, DISH Network, Suddenlink and Verizon.
